Purple Heart

Purple Heart

The Purple Heart is awarded to U.S. soldiers killed or wounded while serving in the military. It is different from all other decorations because soldiers are entitled to it, instead of recommended for it. The Purple Heart was first awarded in 1932. It was created by George Washington, and it is the oldest award given by the United States military. Originally called the Badge of Military Merit, it was awarded to only three soldiers during the Revolutionary War, and was not awarded again until after World War I. A Purple Heart is received for a soldiers' first injury only. Soldiers are awarded an Oak Leaf Cluster for injuries received after they have been awarded the Purple Heart. Only one award will be made for multiple injuries received in the same incident. Purple Heart recipients must have official medical records, and usually must have engaged in direct or indirect combat.
